Piazza Italia
1129 NW JohnsonPortland, OR 97209 (Map) Phone: 503/478-0619 Website: Piazza Italia Gino Schettini, proprietor of the popular "Piazza Italia" restaurant in the Pearl District, is finally seeing his dream come true: Two new Bocce courts have been constructed in the NW Park Blocks. Sometimes referred to as "Italian Lawn Bowling", Bocce is a centuries-old sport usually associated with men who play the game in streets and shady parks, but it is gaining popularity in America as a fun and social game for the whole family. With the help of Bocce-loving friends Bill Marinelli of Portland and Dianna Hanken-Hu who lives nearby in the Pearl District, Schettini and his supporters have worked with the City of Portland for the past three years to get the courts built. After holding fundraisers, getting donations, as well as a $5,000 grant from Portland Parks and Recreation, the $18,000 project is finally a reality. Frederick Zal, a young architect, served as the pro-bono landscape designer.
